Most organizations describe their HR programme as a transformation. Most are running a transition — new system, same operating model.
The distinction matters because the two require different things.
Transition
Replacing manual processes with digital ones. Valuable, measurable, and largely a delivery problem.
Transformation
Changing what HR is accountable for — from processing transactions to shaping capability, performance and organizational design. That is a governance problem, not a systems one.
Sequence matters
Transition first: automate the transactional load so the capacity exists. Transform second, once the function has the time and the data to do it. Attempting both at once usually delivers neither.
